Eminent Scientist to Highlight Personal Vision on Building Scientific Societies in Panel Discussion

Dubai Press Club today announced Dr. Ahmed Zewail, sole recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1999), will deliver the opening speech at the ninth edition of the Arab Media Forum that is set to gather more than 800 media personalities and witness over 70 speakers debating and discussing key industry topics.

Dr. Zewail will also participate in a panel discussion. Titled “Building the Future – The role of science and media”. The session will be moderated by Ahmed Moslemany, Presenter of ’First Edition‘ programme on Dream TV.

Outlining his personal vision to build scientific societies for channelling the Arab youth’s energy and aspirations, Dr. Zewail will examine the importance of localising technologies to catalyse a comprehensive development. He will also invite panelists’ viewpoints on ways to enhance the media’s role in the Arab countries’ efforts to develop region-wide education and scientific research.

As an eminent scientist, Dr. Zewail believes in the possibility of a comprehensive renaissance in the Arab world, and calls to build a ‘scientific society’ as the base for progress. The Egyptian-American scientist offers a clear ‘road map’ to accomplish the objective.

Dr. Zewail was the sole recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize for his pioneering developments in femtoscience, which is the study of chemical reactions across femtoseconds - a millionth of a billionth of a second. More recently, he and his team have developed 4D electron microscopy for the direct visualization of matter’s behaviour, from atoms to biological cells, in the four dimensions of space and time.

Currently, Dr. Zewail is the Linus Pauling Chair Professor Chemistry and Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology. He has also been nominated to participate in President Barack Obama's Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Arab Media Forum 2010 will be held from 12-13 May at The Atlantis-Palm.

The Dubai Press Club team has commenced online registration on its website www.arabmediaforum.ae. In 2009, the Arab Media Forum witnessed more than 2,000 participants including editors-in chief, representatives from the TV and radio segments, opinion editors, and officials from various media domains.
