“Building the Future: the role of science and media” [ Atlantis Ballroom ]
Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:00 PM – 01:00 PM
Eminent scientist Dr. Ahmed Zewail will host a special session on his personal vision about the opportunities and requirements to build scientific societies that will accommodate the Arab youth’s energy and ambition and localize technologies to catalyse a comprehensive development
Dr. Zewail will invite panelists’ viewpoints on ways to enhance the media’s role in the Arab countries’ efforts to develop region-wide education and scientific research.
Dr. Zewail believes in the possibility of a comprehensive renaissance in Egypt and the Arab world, and calls to build a ‘Scientific Society’ as the base for progress. The Egyptian/US scientist offers a clear ‘road map’ to accomplish the objective.
Dr. Zewail was the sole recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize for his pioneering
developments in femtoscience, making possible observations of the birth of molecules and their reactivity in femtosecond, a millionth of a billionth of a second, the scale of atomic motion. More recently, he and his group have developed 4D electron microscopy for the direct visualization of matter’s behavior, from atoms to biological cells, in the four dimensions of space and time. He has mentored more than 300 members of his research school, and published more than 500 articles and treatises. His biography, "Age of Science", which has now been published in more than 10 editions, offers an exposé of his life, the road to the Nobel Prize, and the role of knowledge and politics in human progress.
