Session H: “Egyptian Media Post 25 January!” - Baniyas Grand Ballroom
Wednesday, 18 May 2011 02:45 PM – 04:15 PM
The Egyptian revolution of 25 January has been accompanied by aspirations of Egypt restoring its status, leadership and influence in the Arab world and beyond. The ambitions of this restoration extended to the media landscape, where the Egyptian presence had declined steeply compared to the presence of other Arab countries.
It is indeed good news that the Egyptian media now has the opportunity to restore its influence by taking advantage of the new political environment in Egypt. Other contributing elements are the abundance of talent and creativity in Egypt, and its great history in the fields of culture, arts and literature.
This session will pose a series of questions about the current state of the media scene in Egypt today, and explore its future prospects.
Topics:
- Compare Egyptian media pre- and post 25 January 2011.
- How will the Egyptian media resurgence contribute to Arab media? How will the increased competition impact existing market shares?
- What are the challenges that are posed by the role of professional Arab media in the Egyptian people’s revolution?
- Does the development of the Egyptian media industry require Arab and foreign investment? Or is the media infrastructure already available in Egypt?
- What is the probability of increased freedom for Egyptian media and its transformation into a model similar to that of the Lebanese media?
