Workshop 2 - “Jordanian Media…Birth pangs or Heartburn?” - Al Remal Ballroom
Tuesday, 17 May 2011 09:00 AM – 10:15 AM
Over the past few years, Jordan has witnessed an unprecedented increase in the number of newspapers, magazines, and radio- and satellite television channels. The media continues to evolve and play an important role in shaping public opinion in Jordan.
The pace of competition between traditional and electronic media has also increased tremendously. There are those that speak about the transformation of rumours into actual news, while others argue that such media has become an arena to settle personal disputes! This raises the question whether Jordan is witnessing the birth of a new media environment, or simply suffering a case of media indigestion.
This session seeks to explore the future of Jordanian media by analyzing its current status and using the experiences of its recent history to identify the key challenges.
Topics:
- How do the Jordanian media perceive its current environment and what are the most prominent challenges?
- Is it true that Jordanian media is only concerned about local affairs?
- What is the nature of the relationship between the state and private media? Is there an organization linking between them?
- Is the Jordanian media approaching a new phase of change or is it bound by inertia when it comes to regional and global media transformations?
- What is the status of the Jordanian Media City and what is its impact on the media scene?
