Jacques Charmelot has been covering the Middle East for 25 years for the French wire service Agence France Presse. He was based in Tehran, Beirut, Baghdad, and Washington, and has traveled extensively in the region. During his career, he has reported on the Iran-Iraq war, the conflict in Lebanon, the invasion of Kuwait and the first Gulf war, the Middle East Peace process, and the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. He has also collaborated on a number of books about the Arab world for the Italian publisher RCS-Rizzoli. His last novel 'Kerbala' was published in January 2011. He is the author of a TV documentary 'Saddam Hussein: America’s Best Enemy' and writes regularly for the Robert Schuman Foundation, a European think tank based in Paris. He runs a blog that explores the current turmoil in the region, www.compas-moyen-orient.com. He currently lives in Paris, where he works as an editor at the AFP central office.
